There’s something really special about photographing the same family year after year.
You start out just capturing smiles…
and before you know it, you’re documenting childhood.
This sweet family has trusted me with their memories for years now, and every time they step in front of my camera I’m reminded why I love what I do. Watching kids grow — not just taller — but more confident, more themselves, more connected as siblings… that’s the real magic of photography.
Their December session at Tanglewood Park was the perfect example of that. Tanglewood is one of my most requested locations and you’ll see it throughout my work.
Winter sessions often surprise people.Families often ask what session length works best for them. Some love the simplicity of my mini sessions, others prefer the extra time and flexibility of a regular session, and families wanting a slower paced experience with more variety usually choose a full session. There isn’t a “better” option — just the one that fits your family best.
They imagine everything being brown or dull, but Tanglewood actually shines this time of year. The brick pathways, stone steps, evergreen gardens, and soft golden light create a timeless look that feels warm even in cooler temperatures.
And honestly… winter sessions are some of the most relaxed sessions of the year.
No sweating
No bugs
No rushing before bedtime
No harsh sunlight
Just space to slow down and be together.
That’s exactly what this session felt like.
The girls laughed together, held hands without being asked, and looked to mom and dad naturally — not because I told them to, but because they wanted to. Those are always my favorite moments to capture. The ones that already exist.
I always say photos aren’t just about remembering what your kids looked like…
They help you remember who they were at that stage.
The missing teeth
The shy smiles
The confident grins
The way they still fit perfectly beside you
And getting to watch families come back year after year means I get to preserve not just a moment — but a story unfolding over time.
That is truly the greatest honor of this job.
Tanglewood Park in Clemmons NC is one of my favorite year-round locations, especially in late fall and winter when the light is soft and the gardens feel peaceful.
If you’ve been putting off photos because you think you missed “fall season”… you didn’t.
Winter sessions are one of the best kept secrets.
I would love to photograph your family’s story too.
