There is something really special about getting to photograph families more than once.

I first met this family back in the summer when I photographed them at Boxwood Estate, the beautiful venue where mom and dad were married. That session was full of meaning because we were able to capture their family in a place that was already part of their story.

So when they reached out again and asked if I would photograph their baby girl’s first birthday session, I felt incredibly honored.

First birthdays are such a big milestone. In what feels like the blink of an eye, babies go from tiny newborns to curious little explorers who are sitting up, smiling, and showing their personalities.

For this session, we kept things light, bright, and playful using my small greenhouse set in Mocksville. The soft sunlight, pastel decorations, and sweet little setup created the perfect environment to capture the joy of turning one.

And like many one-year sessions, we finished with one of the most fun traditions…

A cake smash.

If you’ve never seen a one-year-old discover cake for the first time, it’s pretty amazing. Some babies dig right in, some are a little cautious, and some decide frosting belongs everywhere except the cake.

This little one had the best reactions. From curious looks to frosting-covered hands, every moment felt like pure childhood joy. These are the kinds of images parents look back on years later and remember exactly what this stage of life felt like.

One-year sessions are about more than just photos of a baby.

They capture the end of a huge chapter for parents and the beginning of an entirely new stage for their child.

And I’m always so grateful when families trust me to document those moments.
