Best bribes {Education}

When it comes to keeping kids happy and cooperative during a photography session, offering small "bribes" can work wonders! Here are a few of the best incentives to keep your child engaged and excited:

  1. A Favorite Treat – A sweet treat like a lollipop, chocolate, or their favorite snack can be a great motivator. Just make sure it's something you can easily give them between shots, so they stay in a good mood or offer it after the shoot. Mini marshmallows have also been a hit.

  2. A Special Outing or Activity – Promise a fun post-session activity, like going to the park, seeing a movie, or visiting an ice cream shop. The anticipation of something fun after the session can encourage your child to stay focused and engaged.

  3. Screen Time – For many kids, a promise of extra screen time—whether it’s time on a tablet, watching their favorite show, or playing a video game—can be a huge motivator to behave during the shoot.

  4. A Fun Toy or Small Gift – A small, inexpensive toy that they can play with after the session—such as a figurine, sticker book, or even a new art supply—can help keep them excited and entertained.  I love showing kids my treasure chest CLOSED that is full of small little prizes like stickers, shoe charms, Pokemon cards and chapstick/lip gloss.  The anticipation of what is in it sometimes is just enough to keep them motivated throughout the session.

  5. Stickers or a Reward Chart – Younger children respond well to visual rewards. A sticker chart where they can add a sticker for each good behavior can create a sense of achievement and motivate them to cooperate.

  6. Choice of Outfit or Props – Letting your child choose a fun prop, like a favorite stuffed animal or a fun hat, or allowing them to select their outfit for the session gives them some autonomy and a sense of control over the experience.

The key to using bribes effectively is to offer something they truly value, while also making sure the promise is delivered after the session—this helps keep them motivated throughout.

I always try to bring my treasure chest to sessions! Before we start, I show it to the kids (without opening it) to build excitement about what might be inside. After the session, they get to open it and choose a prize. This usually works wonders for keeping their attention, as they’re eager to find out what’s inside. If they start to get distracted or uncooperative during the session, I gently remind them about the treasure waiting for them!
