Confessions of a Photographer: Things I Probably Shouldn’t Admit

Let’s be real—being a photographer is an incredible job. I get to capture memories, meet amazing people, and create art that lasts a lifetime. But behind the dreamy golden-hour sessions and perfectly curated Instagram feeds, there are some things I probably shouldn’t admit… but I’m going to anyway.

So, if you’ve ever wondered what goes on in the mind of a photographer, buckle up—I’m spilling the tea.

1. I Talk to Myself… A Lot

If you ever see me during a session mumbling under my breath, don’t worry—I’m just having a full-blown conversation with myself. “Okay, let’s shift the angle… ooooh, that light is perfect… wait, what was I doing? Oh yeah, fixing the hair.” It’s like a running commentary in my head, except sometimes it accidentally escapes out loud.

2. I Have a Love-Hate Relationship with Pinterest Poses

I appreciate when clients come with inspiration, but let’s be honest—those Pinterest-perfect poses? They usually involve unrealistic lighting, expert-level modeling skills, and some kind of sorcery. I’ll absolutely use them as a guide, but I’m also going to make sure we capture real moments—because those always turn out better anyway.

3. I Have Almost Tripped Over My Own Camera Bag… More Than Once

Let’s just say, gracefulness is not part of my job description. I’ll set my bag down, get into “the zone,” and then—BAM—nearly faceplant over it. If you’ve ever seen me stumble mid-session and tried not to laugh, just know I totally saw that.

4. I Secretly Love a Good Chaotic Family Session

You know those sessions where toddlers are running in opposite directions, dad is giving me the “how much longer?” look, and mom is trying to hold it all together? Yeah, I love those. The chaos makes for the most genuine, personality-filled images, and nothing beats capturing the real, messy beauty of a family just being themselves.

5. Sometimes I Pretend to Take a Picture Just to Give You a Break

If you see me raise my camera but don’t actually press the shutter… yeah, I’m giving you a second to breathe. Some poses feel awkward, and I can tell when someone needs a little reset before I take the shot. It’s all part of the process—trust me.

6. I Get Way Too Emotionally Attached to Your Photos

After spending hours editing, I feel like I know your family. I’ll find myself smiling at my screen like, “Aww, look at them laughing together!” And don’t even get me started on weddings or emotional parent-child moments—yes, I’ve teared up while editing before.

7. I Will 100% Hype You Up… Even If It Feels Ridiculous

If you hear me saying, “YESSS, YOU LOOK AMAZING!” or “Oh my gosh, this is STUNNING!”—just go with it. Am I being a little dramatic? Maybe. But do I mean it? Absolutely. If hyping you up gets you to relax and feel confident, I’ll do it all session long.

8. I Secretly Love the Outtakes More Than the Perfect Shots

Sure, the posed shots are great, but those in-between moments? The goofy faces, the wind-blown hair, the real belly laughs—those are my favorites. I always include a few in your gallery because they capture your family’s personality in the best way.

9. I Sometimes Take a Test Shot to Make It Look Like I Know What I’m Doing

There are moments when I need to adjust settings or find the right angle, but instead of awkwardly standing there messing with my camera, I’ll take a few fake “test shots.” It looks like I’m confidently capturing magic when, in reality, I’m thinking, “Why is this lighting so weird right now?”

10. I Overanalyze Every Photo Before Delivering It

I zoom in, I adjust, I tweak the tiniest details you’ll probably never notice. I’ll spend five minutes debating whether that one strand of hair should stay or go. I can’t help it—I just want every photo to be perfect.

So, There You Have It…

Photography is my passion, but it comes with its quirks. At the end of the day, my goal is to make your session fun, relaxed, and full of genuine moments—awkward behind-the-scenes moments and all.

So, if you ever catch me tripping over my own feet, hyping you up a little too much, or talking to myself mid-session, just know it’s all part of the magic. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
