How to Prepare for Your Senior Pictures (Complete Checklist)

A step-by-step guide for seniors and parents before photo day

Senior pictures are exciting… but they can also feel a little stressful.

Almost every family asks me the same thing:

“What should we actually DO to get ready?”

Good news — you don’t need to be a model, buy a brand-new wardrobe, or plan for weeks.
The best senior sessions happen when you prepare just enough to feel confident without overthinking everything.

This guide walks you through exactly how to prepare — from booking week all the way to the morning of your session.

Save this. Screenshot it. Send it to your senior 😉

3–4 Weeks Before: The Planning Stage

This is where your session really becomes yours.

Decide the vibe

Before clothes or locations, figure out the feel you want.

Ask yourself:

  • Sporty or casual?

  • Dressy or relaxed?

  • Nature or urban?

  • Clean and simple or personality-filled?

You don’t need a theme — just direction.

Your photos should look like you on your best day, not a different person.

Choose outfits (don’t overcomplicate it)

You only need 2–3 outfits.

Think variety, not quantity:

✔ Casual everyday outfit
✔ A nicer/dressier option
✔ One personality outfit (sports uniform, hobby, or college tee)

Avoid:

  • Tiny stripes

  • Neon colors

  • Large logos/graphics

  • Clothes you constantly adjust

Confidence photographs better than trendy.

Start grooming prep

Small details make a big difference.

Schedule now:

  • Haircut (1–2 weeks before session)

  • Eyebrow clean-up

  • Nails (neutral or clean works great)

  • Facial (not your first ever — skin can react)

Avoid trying brand-new skincare right before photos.

1 Week Before: The Confidence Week

Now we remove stress.

Try everything on together

Put on full outfits including:

  • Shoes

  • Jewelry

  • Layers

Stand, sit, and move around.
If you constantly fix something — choose different pieces.

Practice hair & makeup

You don’t need perfection — just familiarity.

For girls

  • Slightly more makeup than daily wear photographs best

  • Matte finishes photograph better than shimmer

For guys

  • Trim facial hair

  • Clean neckline & sideburns

  • Chapstick matters more than you think

Prep a small detail bag

Bring:

  • Lip balm

  • Brush/comb

  • Powder (if applicable)

  • Deodorant

  • Water

You’ll be glad you did.

Cap & Gown Prep (The Most Forgotten Part)

Every year I hear:
“We have the gown… wait — where’s the tassel?”

Cap & gown photos are meaningful because they mark the milestone — but they require a little preparation.

Bring ALL the pieces

Double-check before leaving:

✔ Cap
✔ Gown
✔ Tassel
✔ Correct year charm
✔ Honor cords / medals / stoles (if applicable)

The tassel is the #1 forgotten item — and schools rarely have extras.

Steam or iron the gown

They come folded in plastic and wrinkle easily.

  • Hang it a few days early

  • Steam lightly (best option)

  • If ironing, use low heat inside-out

Wrinkles show up in photos more than you expect.

Try the cap on ahead of time

Decide before the session:

  • Straight across or tilted

  • Lower on forehead or higher

  • How it sits with your hairstyle

This prevents constant adjusting during photos.

Think about what’s under the gown

Parts of the outfit will show in many poses.

Some seniors keep it simple — others personalize it.

Ideas students love:

  • College t-shirt under gown

  • Hoodie at neckline

  • School colors

  • Pennant

  • Future college gear

  • Sports uniform underneath

Don’t want cap & gown photos? Totally okay.

Your session should reflect you, not just tradition.

Hair tip

Caps flatten hair — especially curls or volume.

So we usually photograph:
Regular outfits first → cap & gown last

The Day Before: Set Yourself Up for Success

No scrambling tomorrow.

✔ Steam/iron outfits
✔ Hang them together
✔ Pack shoes & accessories
✔ Pack cap & gown items
✔ Charge phone
✔ Drink water
✔ Get sleep

Avoid sunburn the day before.

The Morning Of Your Session

Keep this simple.

Eat something light
Give yourself extra time
Don’t rush getting ready

Parents — this matters:

A calm morning = relaxed photos.

During the Session

You don’t need to know how to pose.

My job is to guide you — where to stand, what to do with your hands, how to move.

You just need to show up and be willing to try.

The best photos always happen about 10 minutes in when you realize:

“Oh… this is actually fun.”

Bonus Tips That Make a Big Difference

  • Remove Apple watches unless intentional

  • Take out hair ties on wrists

  • Clean car mirrors (sometimes we use them!)

  • Bring a parent — not an audience

  • Trust the process

Candid moments photograph best.

The Truth About Senior Photos

You don’t need to look perfect.

You need to look like yourself right before life changes.

That’s what makes these matter years from now.
