I'm Not Photogenic - What Actually Happens During a Session?

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me, "I'm not photogenic," I'd probably have enough money to buy a really nice camera lens.

Seriously.

People tell me this all the time.

Before family sessions.
Before senior sessions.
Before branding sessions.
Before headshots.

And every single time, I smile because I know something they don't:

Almost nobody feels photogenic.

The people whose photos you admire on social media?
Most of them felt awkward too.

The mom who looks completely relaxed in her family photos?
She probably told me she hates having her picture taken.

The senior who looks confident and natural?
They usually start the session feeling nervous.

The truth is, being photogenic isn't something you're born with. Most of the time, it's simply the result of good lighting, good direction, and someone helping you feel comfortable.

Three women and a child sitting on grass in a sunny park, chatting and relaxing outdoors.
Family sitting outdoors in a sunny park, hugging and smiling together
Four women sitting on grass in a sunny park with trees and a baby in a yellow shirt

So What Actually Happens During a Session?

Most people imagine a photo session looking something like this:

Stand here.
Smile.
Look at the camera.
Don't move.

That sounds uncomfortable because honestly... it is.

My sessions are much more relaxed than that.

We'll walk.

We'll talk.

I'll give you simple directions so you're never wondering what to do with your hands.

If you're a family, I'll have you interact with each other instead of staring at me the entire time.

If you're a senior, we'll chat about your hobbies, future plans, sports, or activities.

If you're a business owner, we'll focus on helping your personality come through.

Most of the time, people stop worrying about the camera within the first few minutes.

The Goal Isn't Perfection

One of the biggest misconceptions about photography is that you're supposed to show up looking perfect.

Perfect outfit.
Perfect hair.
Perfect smile.
Perfect kids.

But those aren't the photos people treasure years later.

The photos people love are the ones that feel like them.

The laugh you didn't plan.
The way your child reaches for your hand.
The smile your spouse gives you when you aren't paying attention.
The confidence that shows up once you stop overthinking.

That's what I'm looking for.

Trust Me—I've Heard It Before

I've photographed hundreds of people over the years.

Teachers.
Business owners.
Teenagers.
Toddlers.
Grandparents.
Moms who haven't been in front of a camera in years.

And I can't tell you how many times I've heard:

"I hate having my picture taken."

"I never look good in photos."

"I'm going to be awkward."

Then the gallery is delivered and they say:

"Those are actually really good."

That's because my job isn't just pressing a button.

My job is helping you feel comfortable enough to be yourself.

If You're Waiting Until...

A lot of people tell themselves they'll book photos when:

  • They lose weight.
  • Their kids are older.
  • Life slows down.
  • They feel more confident.
  • Everything is "just right."

But life rarely works that way.

The truth is, the people who love you right now don't see the things you're criticizing about yourself.

They see you.

And someday these photos won't just be for you.

They'll be for your kids.
Your family.
The people who love you.

So If You're Thinking...

"I'm not photogenic."

That's okay.

You don't have to be.

You just have to show up.

I'll help with the rest.

Think you're not photogenic? You're exactly who I love working with. If you've been putting off family photos, senior portraits, or updated headshots because you're nervous in front of the camera, let's change that. I'd love to help you create photos that feel natural, relaxed, and completely you. Ready to book? Let's chat. ❤️📸
