One phrase I hear all the time — and maybe you say it too — is this:
"I'm just so busy."
Or sometimes it sounds like:
"I didn't reach out because I know you're busy."
But today I want to challenge that idea a little bit.
Because the truth is… I'm not busy.
Now before that sounds strange, let me explain.
I run a business.
I have three kids.
A husband.
A house.
Three dogs.
Life is full.
But I am not too busy.
Busy is not my identity.
Busy is not my excuse.
And busy does not run my life.
My goals run my life.
My priorities run my life.
My vision runs my life.
And those are very different things.
Full Does Not Mean Unavailable
There are definitely seasons where life feels full.
For me, spring and fall are especially busy seasons. Those months are packed with photography sessions, school schedules, sports practices, and family commitments.
Everything overlaps.
But full does not mean unavailable.
Full does not mean disconnected.
And full definitely does not mean I stop showing up for the things that matter most.
The Truth Behind "I'm Busy"
Here's something I realized a while ago.
When we say we're "too busy," sometimes what we're really doing is creating distance.
Distance from people.
Distance from opportunities.
Distance from the life we say we want.
Because saying "I'm busy" often feels easier than saying the truth.
Sometimes the truth is:
"I'm tired."
"I don't have the energy."
"I'm overwhelmed."
"I don't feel like trying today."
And honestly — those are all valid feelings.
But when we hide behind the word busy, we lose awareness of what's actually happening in our lives.
And we stop taking ownership of our time.
What Is Actually Surviving in Your Life?
If you catch yourself saying you're busy, try asking yourself this question:
What is actually surviving in my life right now?
Is it:
-
Sleep
-
Nutrition
-
Your business
-
Your kids' routines
-
Your relationships
Or are you constantly reacting to everything around you?
Putting out fires.
Saying yes to things that don't really matter.
Because the reality is we all have the same 24 hours in a day.
So if life feels chaotic, it's worth asking:
What is consuming my time?
And is it aligned with who I want to be?
You're Not Too Busy. You're Choosing.
One mindset shift that has helped me is remembering this:
You're not too busy.
You're choosing.
For example:
I'm not too busy to help someone…
but maybe I can help for an hour instead of half a day.
I'm not too busy to connect…
but maybe I can't do a long lunch, so we grab coffee instead.
I'm not too busy to take care of myself…
but maybe I walk one mile in the morning and another in the evening instead of four all at once.
It's not about having unlimited time.
It's about being intentional with the time you do have.
The Busy Trap (Especially for Moms)
I think this hits especially hard for moms.
Because somewhere along the way, busy became a badge of honor.
If we're exhausted…
If we're running from one thing to the next…
If our schedules are completely full…
Then it feels like we're doing enough.
But that mindset can quietly pull us into a trap.
A trap where we stop being intentional.
Where we lose sight of our goals.
Where we slowly drift away from the person we actually want to become.
Because busy is reactive.
And reactive is the opposite of aligned.
If You Don't Decide, Life Will Decide for You
If you don't decide your priorities, your life will decide them for you.
And that is where "busy" often comes from.
It's usually not too much to do.
It's a lack of decision about what actually matters.
Getting ahead of busy looks like this:
-
Decide your non-negotiables
-
Plan your time before it fills up
-
Leave margin in your schedule on purpose
-
Be honest about what you're saying yes and no to
The Life I Actually Want to Live
I don't want to be known as someone who is always busy.
I want to be known as someone who:
Shows up.
Follows through.
Lives aligned with her priorities.
And makes time for what matters.
And I want that for you too.
So the next time you catch yourself saying:
"I'm just so busy."
Pause and ask yourself:
Is that actually true?
Or is that easier than telling the real story?
Because you are not meant to live a life that constantly feels out of control.
You are allowed to choose.
You are allowed to adjust.
And you are absolutely capable of creating a life aligned with your priorities — not one controlled by busyness.
