Locations for Your Next Session: My Top Picks and Ideal Timing {Education}

As a photographer, one of the most exciting and important parts of planning a session is choosing the perfect location. Whether you want a backdrop filled with vibrant fall leaves, bright spring blooms, or the perfect summer landscape, the right spot makes all the difference.

That’s why I’m thrilled to share my top four favorite photoshoot locations for any season. The best part? They’re completely free to use!

While some popular locations charge a hefty fee for photoshoots (sometimes as much as $200 or more!), these spots come with no extra cost.

Here’s an insider’s guide to the best photoshoot locations around - and when to capture them at their best!

1. Tanglewood Park in Clemmons: A Historic, Nature-Filled Wonderland

Located in Clemmons North Carolina, Tanglewood Park is a dream for any nature lover or history enthusiast.

The park features the Manor House, a grand, historic building that adds an air of elegance to your photos. The arboretum gardens are full of beautifully landscaped flowers, arbors, and benches, perfect for more intimate, romantic shots. For those who want a rustic feel, the park also boasts barns, wooded trails, and wide-open spaces.

Tanglewood’s rich variety means it has something for everyone—from stately, historic shots to natural, woodsy scenes. The trails and gardens transform beautifully with each season, making it a wonderful option all year round.

Best Time for Photos:
The park is beautiful in both morning and evening. For softer light and that golden glow, I recommend evening sessions. If you’re looking for a more peaceful, dewy atmosphere, grab your coffee and let’s do a session early in the morning.

Address: 4061 Clemmons Rd, Clemmons, NC 27012

2. Village Point Greenway in Clemmons: Peaceful Paths and Serene Ponds

If you’re drawn to tranquil, natural settings, the Village Point Greenway in Clemmons will speak to your soul. Offering a wonderful mix of nature and calm, inviting landscapes, the paved paths around Village Point Lake wind through beautiful wooded areas, leading to the fishing pier. The pier is the perfect spot for capturing reflections on the water, while the wooded areas give a peaceful and natural feel to your images.

In fall, the leaves make for breathtaking photos showing off their vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. In spring and summer, the lush greenery and blooming flowers set a gorgeous, lively scene. Even in winter, the simplicity of the bare trees and the quiet of the pond create a serene atmosphere.

Best Time for Photos:
Both morning and evening sessions are perfect for this location, but the evening light reflecting off the pond can create particularly stunning, golden tones.

3. Bethabara Park in Winston-Salem: A Historic Hidden Gem

Bethabara Park offers a beautifully preserved slice of history that feels like stepping back in time. The park is perfect for those who want a unique, textured backdrop for their photos. The cobblestone buildings, barns, wooden fences, and wooden bridges provide an array of charming, rustic settings. The open fields and paths also give plenty of opportunities for more natural, wide-open shots.

What makes Bethabara special is its intimate, historic vibe—much like Old Salem (which charges a fee), but without the high cost. It’s a great location for anyone wanting a mix of history and natural beauty in a small, manageable setting.

Best Time for Photos:
Evening sessions are best to capture the full charm of the park. As the golden hour light filters through the historic buildings and trees, it adds a warm glow to the rustic setting. Morning sessions can work here as well, but the range of photogenic spots is more limited during early hours.

4. My Private Property in Mocksville: Secluded, Versatile, and Full of Charm

I may be a little biased, but this one is my favorite! If you’re dreaming of a private and distraction-free session, you’ll love my property in the Farmington area of Mocksville, NC. Not only do you get the luxury of complete privacy (no sharing space with other visitors, except maybe the wildlife!), but the variety of backdrops here offers something for everyone. Fields of tall grass, scenic ponds, and rows of trees, set the scene for a dreamy, natural look. With a rustic barn, old metal gates, and weathered buildings this spot delivers all the elements that bring a timeless, rustic charm to your photos.

Whether you're after a cozy family session or something with a classic, countryside feel, this location is versatile enough to match your vision in any season.

Best Time for Photos:
To make the most of the beautiful landscape, I recommend evening sessions. The soft, golden-hour light adds a magical warmth, especially when the sun sets behind the fields and water.

A Quick Note on Reynolda Gardens (Fee-Based)

While all of the above locations are free, if you’re looking for a truly iconic spot, Reynolda Gardens is worth considering, even with its fee. With manicured gardens, arbors, a glass greenhouse, winding pathways, and a lovely waterfall, it’s one of the most photogenic spots in the area. However, keep in mind the location fees can drive up the cost of your shoot, whereas the other options provide equally stunning scenery at no extra cost.

Why Free Locations Matter

Some popular locations charge fees that can add up quickly, increasing the overall cost of your session. But these free spots offer equally beautiful, varied backdrops without the extra cost, giving you more flexibility with your budget. Whether you’re after historic charm, rustic landscapes, or peaceful natural beauty, these locations have it all—without the price tag.
