Remember Who You Are (Outside of Your Business)

Remember Who You Are (Outside of Your Business)

When you run a business — especially one you’re deeply passionate about — it’s easy to lose sight of who you are outside of it.
You start showing up online as your business name, your brand, your products or services. But here’s the thing — people don’t connect with businesses, they connect with people.

Whether you’re a photographer, boutique owner, realtor, or coach, one of the best ways to deepen your connection with your audience is to remind them (and yourself) who you are beyond what you sell.

Why This Matters

Your audience wants to know the real person behind the business — the one who has favorite coffee flavors, weekend routines, funny pet stories, or personal goals. Those small details are what make you relatable.

When clients feel like they know you, trust naturally follows. They begin to see your brand as more than a service — it becomes a relationship.

Showing up as your whole self builds connection, trust, and community — and it reminds you that your identity is made up of more than just your work.

How to Find Your 5 “Connection Points”

If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a simple exercise:

  1. Grab a notebook and list out things you love, do regularly, or talk about often.

  2. Circle five that feel most “you.” These are the ones that spark conversation, make you light up, or help people instantly relate.

  3. Ask yourself: “Would I still do this if my business didn’t exist?” If the answer is yes, it’s a great sign it belongs on your list.

My 5 Core Things

These have evolved over the years, but they’ve always been at the heart of who I am — and they naturally show up in my life and my business:

1️⃣ I walk daily. My clients see this through my stories and posts — it’s my time to reset, think, and find inspiration.
2️⃣ I’m a boy mom. My life often revolves around sports, school, and family chaos, and I love sharing those moments.
3️⃣ Coffee & mint. It’s a small thing, but it’s so me. From mint lip balm to coffee shop mornings — it’s my personality in a flavor.
4️⃣ I love dogs. We have three, and they’re a big part of our family (and occasionally my sessions).
5️⃣ My health journey. This has been such an important part of my personal growth, discipline, and mental well-being.

These five things give people glimpses into my world — and those glimpses have built some of the strongest relationships in my business. Clients connect with me over our shared love of dogs, message me about my walks, and even tell me about their own health journeys.

Your Turn

Think about your own five things.

  • What would your friends or family say you’re known for?

  • What could someone mention that would make you say, “Oh, that’s totally me”?

  • What do you share naturally — not because it’s marketing, but because it’s just part of who you are?

Your five things don’t have to be flashy. They just have to be real. Because the more your audience sees you as a real person, the more they’ll want to connect, support, and work with you.

Final Thought

Your business might be what you do, but it’s not who you are.
The more you show up authentically and share the small, everyday things that make you you, the more your audience will feel connected — and that connection is what turns followers into friends, and clients into lifelong supporters.

A woman stands outdoors holding a mug with both hands, smiling softly. She wears a floral cream blouse, and trees create a natural blurred background.
A smiling couple stands outdoors during fall, with golden leaves in the background. The man wraps his arms around the woman from behind, both dressed in cozy sweaters, sharing a warm embrace.
A young woman with curly hair and braces leans against a rustic wooden barn wall, wearing a white puff-sleeve dress and delicate jewelry, smiling confidently in soft afternoon light.

A group of five women walks arm-in-arm inside a chic boutique, laughing together. They wear stylish outfits and share a fun, lighthearted moment surrounded by clothing racks and warm lighting.
