What If My Kids Don’t Cooperate During Photos?

Let’s just go ahead and say the thing most parents are thinking before a session:

“What if my kids don’t cooperate?”

Or…

“What if I spend all this time and money and my kids act like… not the sweet little angels I had pictured?”

(We’ve all been there 😅)

This is one of the most common concerns I hear—and it’s a valid one.

Because the truth is…

We don’t actually know how our kids are going to show up that day.

Let’s Be Real About Kids

Kids are unpredictable.

They get tired.
They get overstimulated.
They decide they don’t like their outfit.
They want snacks.
They don’t want to sit still.
They don’t want to smile on command.

And honestly?

That’s normal.

Your kids don’t have to be perfectly behaved for your session to be successful.

What Actually Makes or Breaks a Session

After 15+ years of photographing families, I can tell you this honestly:

It’s rarely the kids’ behavior that makes or breaks a session.
It’s how we respond to it.

Kids feed off energy.

If things start to feel stressful, rushed, or pressured… they feel it.

If we keep things light, flexible, and a little playful… they respond to that too.

That doesn’t mean your kids will be “perfect.”

But it does mean we can still create really meaningful, beautiful images.

You Don’t Have to Handle It Alone

If this is something you’re worried about—tell me.

Seriously.

Depending on your child’s age, personality, and your concerns, we can:

  • Choose the right session type (mini vs full session)

  • Pick the best time of day for your kids

  • Choose a location that gives them space to move

  • Build in flexibility so it doesn’t feel rushed

You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

A Real Example (Because This Happens)

There’s one session I’ll never forget.

A little girl was just having a morning.

She didn’t sleep well, she wasn’t herself, and even though we scheduled for her “best time”… it just wasn’t working.

Instead of forcing it, we pivoted.

We met again later that afternoon.

And it was a complete 180.

Happy, relaxed, playful—the kind of session everyone hopes for.

Sometimes it’s not about pushing through.

Sometimes it’s about patience… and being willing to adjust.

What Your Session Actually Looks Like

If your kids are running, laughing, exploring, or even a little wild…

That’s okay.

I’m not expecting them to stand still and smile perfectly the whole time.

I’ll guide you, keep things moving, and create space for natural moments.

Some of the best photos come from:

  • Kids being silly

  • Snuggles in between the chaos

  • Genuine laughs (not forced smiles)

  • Little in-between moments you didn’t even notice

That’s real life.

And that’s what you’ll want to remember.

A Few Simple Tips for Parents

If you’re coming into a session feeling a little nervous about your kids, here are a few things that can help:

1. Don’t overprep or overhype

Talking about it too much can actually create pressure.

Keep it simple and low-key.

2. Bring snacks (always 😅)

Quick, non-messy snacks can be a lifesaver.

3. Let go of “perfect behavior”

The goal isn’t perfect.

The goal is connection.

4. Trust me to lead

You don’t have to constantly correct or manage every moment.

I’ve got this.

5. Stay calm (even if it feels chaotic)

Your energy sets the tone more than anything else.

At the End of the Day

Your kids don’t have to be perfect.

They just have to be themselves.

And I promise you—after doing this for over 15 years—

Kids being kids almost never ruins a session.

We figure it out.
We adjust.
We keep going.

And more often than not… those end up being the sessions you love the most.

If you’ve been holding off on family photos because you’re worried about how your kids will behave…

You don’t have to wait for the “perfect stage” or the “perfect mood.”
