Business Headshots vs Branding Photography: What's the Difference?

One of the questions I get asked most often by business owners is:

"Do I need headshots or branding photos?"

The short answer?

It depends on how you plan to use the images.

While both are important, business headshots and branding photography serve very different purposes.

What Are Business Headshots?

A business headshot is exactly what it sounds like—a professional portrait of you.

Typically, headshots focus on your face and upper body with a clean, professional look. They're perfect for:

  • LinkedIn profiles
  • Company websites
  • Email signatures
  • Business cards
  • Speaking engagements
  • Professional directories

Think of a headshot as your digital handshake. It's often the first impression someone has of you and your business.

If you simply need an updated professional photo of yourself, a headshot session may be exactly what you need.

What Is Branding Photography?

Branding photography goes beyond a single portrait.

Branding sessions are designed to tell the story of your business and help people connect with the person behind the brand.

These sessions may include:

  • Professional portraits
  • Behind-the-scenes images
  • Photos of you working with clients
  • Images of your products or services
  • Workspace photos
  • Lifestyle images that reflect your personality and brand

The goal is to create a collection of images that can be used throughout your website, social media, marketing materials, and content throughout the year.

Which One Is Right for You?

If you're asking yourself which option you need, here are a few simple guidelines:

A Headshot Session May Be Best If:

  • You need one or two professional images.
  • You're updating LinkedIn or your company website.
  • You need a quick, professional refresh.
  • You work for a company that requires a standard professional portrait.

A Branding Session May Be Best If:

  • You own a business.
  • You create content regularly.
  • You need images for social media and marketing.
  • You want people to get to know, like, and trust you before they ever contact you.
  • You need a variety of images instead of just one portrait.

Why Branding Photography Matters

People connect with people.

Before someone hires a photographer, realtor, dentist, coach, or small business owner, they often want to know who they're working with.

Professional branding images help tell your story, build trust, and show potential clients what it's like to work with you.

In today's world, your online presence is often your first introduction—and great branding photography helps make that introduction feel authentic and personal.

The Good News

You don't always have to choose one or the other.

Many of my branding sessions include updated headshots as part of the experience, giving business owners both professional portraits and storytelling images they can use throughout the year.

The goal isn't just to create beautiful photos.

It's to create images that help your business grow.

If you're not sure which option is right for you, I'd love to help you determine the best fit for your business and goals.
