If the thought of stepping in front of a camera makes your stomach flip a little… you are absolutely not alone.
In fact, I would say most of the people I photograph feel this way at the beginning of their session.
And the best part?
You can feel nervous… and still end up with photos that look natural, relaxed, and completely like you.
I’ve got you.
Why Do We Feel So Nervous?
Let’s just say it out loud—being in front of a camera can feel vulnerable.
Here are some of the most common things I hear from clients:
-
“I don’t know what to do with my hands.”
-
“I feel awkward.”
-
“I’m not photogenic.”
-
“I don’t like how I look in photos.”
-
“My kids won’t cooperate.”
-
“I don’t want this to feel forced.”
And underneath all of that is usually one bigger feeling:
You don’t want to feel uncomfortable… and you don’t want that discomfort to show.
That makes complete sense.
But here’s the truth most people don’t realize until they’ve gone through a session:
👉 You don’t have to know what you’re doing.
👉 You don’t have to feel 100% confident.
👉 You don’t have to be “good in front of a camera.”
That’s my job.
You Can Be Nervous and Still Look Natural
This is something I wish more people knew:
Being nervous at the start of your session does not mean your photos will look stiff or awkward.
There’s always a transition.
The first few minutes?
A little unsure. A little stiff. Totally normal.
And then something shifts.
You start talking.
You start moving.
Your kids start being themselves.
You forget (even just a little) that the camera is there.
That’s where the magic happens.
My job isn’t to just take photos—it’s to guide you into moments that feel real, comfortable, and natural.
So you don’t have to perform.
You just have to show up.
What I Do to Help You Feel Comfortable
If you’re nervous, I want you to know this isn’t something you have to figure out on your own.
I’m not going to leave you standing there wondering what to do.
I will:
-
Give you simple direction (nothing complicated or stiff)
-
Keep you moving so you’re not overthinking
-
Talk you through everything
-
Let your kids be kids
-
Adjust based on your comfort level
-
Create space for real moments instead of forced poses
There’s no pressure to be perfect.
Honestly, the in-between moments—the laughs, the movement, the connection—those are the ones you’ll love the most.
A Few Simple Tips If You’re Feeling Nervous
If you’re already thinking, “Okay but I KNOW I’m going to be nervous…” — here are a few things that can help:
1. Say it out loud
Seriously.
Tell me you’re nervous at the start of your session.
It helps me adjust right away and meet you where you are.
2. Focus on your people, not the camera
Look at your kids. Talk to your spouse. Laugh at something real.
Connection always photographs better than perfection.
3. Keep moving
The more you stand still and think, the more awkward it feels.
Movement = natural photos.
I’ll guide you through this the whole time.
4. Let go of “perfect”
Your kids don’t have to behave perfectly.
You don’t have to pose perfectly.
The goal isn’t perfect.
It’s real.
5. Trust the process
You don’t see what I see in real time.
What might feel a little chaotic or imperfect in the moment often turns into the most meaningful images.
One last thing
If you’re nervous about booking a session or showing up to one…
I want you to hear this clearly:

You can be nervous and still walk away with photos that feel like you—comfortable, connected, and real.
I’ve got you 🤍
If you’ve been putting off photos because you feel awkward or unsure…
This is your sign to stop waiting.
You don’t have to feel ready. You don’t have to know what to do.
You just have to show up—and I’ll guide you through the rest.
