Let’s just say it out loud.
Most of the time…
Dad is not the one asking for family photos.
In fact, if you’ve ever tried to book a session, you’ve probably heard something like:
-
“Do we really need to do this?”
-
“I hate having my picture taken.”
-
“This sounds like a lot…”
And as moms, it can feel frustrating.
Because you’re not asking for much.
You just want photos of your family.
Photos of your kids.
Photos of this season before it passes.
So what’s really going on?
It’s Not That They Don’t Care
This is the part I think gets misunderstood the most.
It’s easy to assume:
“They don’t care about the photos.”
But in most cases?
That’s not true at all.
They care about their family.
They care about their kids.
They care about the memories.
They just don’t always connect those feelings to the photos themselves—at least not right away.
They’re Thinking About the Experience (Not the Outcome)
Most dads aren’t picturing the final gallery.
They’re picturing:
-
Standing in front of a camera
-
Being told how to pose
-
Kids not cooperating
-
Feeling awkward
They’re thinking about the process… not the result.
Meanwhile, you’re thinking about:
-
The images on your walls
-
The memories you’re preserving
-
Looking back on this season years from now
Two completely different perspectives.
They Don’t Want to Feel Awkward or Forced
This is a big one.
A lot of dads don’t love photos because:
-
They don’t know what to do
-
They don’t want to feel staged
-
They don’t want it to feel fake
And honestly?
That makes sense.
Because if that’s what family photos felt like in the past…
Of course they wouldn’t be excited about it.
They’re Doing It Because It Matters to You
Here’s the part that doesn’t get talked about enough:
Even if they’re hesitant…
They still show up.
Because it matters to you.
And that says a lot.
It might not look like excitement.
It might not sound like enthusiasm.
But it is love.
And Then Something Happens…
Almost every single time, this is what I see:
They show up unsure.
A little hesitant.
Maybe even counting down the minutes.
And then…
They relax.
Because it’s not what they expected.
There’s no pressure to be perfect.
No forced smiles.
No awkward posing.
Just:
-
Playing with their kids
-
Laughing naturally
-
Being themselves
And by the end?
They’re the ones saying:
“That actually wasn’t bad.”
Or even…
“That was kind of fun.”
The Photos They Didn’t Know They Needed
Here’s what I wish more dads realized:
These photos aren’t just for right now.
They’re for:
-
Your kids to look back on
-
Your family to hold onto
-
Moments that won’t look the same a year from now
Because one day…
Your kids won’t be this little.
They won’t reach for your hand the same way.
They won’t look at you like they do right now.
And these photos?
They become proof that this moment existed.
For the Moms Reading This
If you’re the one trying to make this happen…
You’re not wrong for wanting it.
You’re not asking for too much.
You’re preserving something that matters.
For the Dads (If You’re Reading This)
You don’t have to love photos.
You don’t have to know what to do.
You just have to show up.
That’s it.
Because one day, these images will mean more than you realize.
Ready to Book Your Session?
If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect time”… this is your sign.
You don’t need everything to be perfectly coordinated.
You don’t need your kids to behave perfectly.
And you don’t need everyone to be 100% excited going into it (yes—even dad 😉).
You just need to show up.
Because these moments?
They’re already worth capturing.
Or if you have questions first, I’m always happy to help:
