Why Fall Family Photos Are Worth Making Time For

Here I am, sitting here looking at my calendar, and it's pretty full.

Between work, school, sports, activities and everything else that comes with this season of life, there aren't a whole lot of empty spaces.

But at this exact moment, I'm also sitting in a quiet house.

My oldest two boys are a junior and a senior in high school. My youngest is only 10, but knowing how quickly the last 10 years have gone, I have a feeling the next eight are going to fly by just as fast.

And family life looks so different now than it did when they were little.

When my boys were younger, I made the schedule. I made the plans. I decided where we were going and when we were going, and for the most part, they just went along with my flow.

Now?

If I want all five of us to do something together, I have to check everyone's schedule.

Who has practice? Who has a game? Who is working? Who already made plans? What do Marc and I have going on?

Getting everyone in the same place at the same time takes a little more effort these days.

But I've realized something that has worked really well for us, even in this busy season of life:

If we plan it in advance, it usually happens.

There are always exceptions, of course. Life happens. Plans change.

But the things we say we'll do "one day" or "soon" rarely seem to happen unless we actually choose a date and put it on the calendar.

And family photos are no different.

If Family Photos Are Important to You, Pick the Date

Here we are on the brink of October.

Fall calendars are filling up. The holidays will be here before we know it. And it would be really easy to look at everything already on the schedule and decide that family photos can wait.

But if getting updated family photos is something that's important to you, my advice is simple:

Pick a date.

Schedule the session.

Have everyone put it on their calendars.

Once it's there, you're much more likely to make it happen.

You don't have to have everyone's outfits figured out before you book. You don't need to know exactly where you want to take them. You don't even have to know what you're going to do with the photos afterward.

Those things can be figured out.

The hardest part sometimes is simply deciding, "We're doing this."

There Will Always Be a Reason to Wait

Maybe this fall feels especially busy.

Maybe you want to lose a few pounds first.

Maybe your teenager isn't exactly thrilled about family pictures.

Maybe coordinating everyone's schedule feels like more work than you want to take on right now.

There will probably always be a reason that next year sounds easier.

But next year, your kids will be a year older too.

And I'm realizing more and more that there is a limited amount of time when our kids' schedules are still somewhat ours.

It won't be long before mine are off to college. Eventually they'll move out. They'll have jobs, relationships, families and lives of their own.

Their schedules will be 100% theirs.

And getting everyone together for family photos may become even harder than it is today.

Someday, the House Gets Quiet

That's what I'm thinking about as I sit here in my quiet house.

Not that long ago, it felt like there was always someone running through it. There were toys everywhere, constant noise and little boys who were pretty much wherever I was.

Now there are more and more quiet moments.

That's life. It's supposed to change.

But it also makes me really thankful for the photographs we've taken along the way.

Not because every year was perfect.

Not because everyone always wanted to take them.

But because those photographs let me go back and see exactly who we were in that season.

So if you've been saying you want updated family photos this fall, don't leave it at "we should do that."

Pick the date.

Put it on everyone's calendar.

Make the time.

Because it won't be long before you're sitting in a quiet house too — and I don't think you'll ever regret having those fall 2026 photos to look back on.
