5 Tips for Capturing the Happiest Smiles from Your Kids During a Photo Session

Every parent wants those beautiful, joy-filled smiles in their family photos. But let’s be honest—kids don’t always cooperate the way we expect. The key to getting genuine, happy smiles isn’t forcing them to “say cheese” but instead creating an environment where they feel comfortable, relaxed, and free to have fun. Here are five tips to help capture those real, heartwarming smiles!

1. Show Them Their Genuine Smiles from Past Photos

Kids love to see themselves in pictures! Before your session, show them photos where they were truly happy—laughing, playing, and being their natural selves. Point out how beautiful their real smile is. This builds confidence and helps them understand that their best smiles come from being themselves, not from forcing a “pretty” pose.

2. Skip the “Smile Pretty” Request

Telling kids to “smile pretty” can sometimes backfire. It can put pressure on them, leading to stiff or forced expressions. Instead, let them relax and enjoy the moment. Play games, tell jokes, or let them be silly—this will bring out the natural, radiant smiles you’re hoping for.

3. Keep It Positive—Even If They’re Not Cooperating

Kids are unpredictable. Some may not follow directions, some may be wiggly, and others may get shy. If they’re not acting exactly as you envisioned, try not to show disappointment or frustration. Punishing them or scolding them in the middle of the session won’t make things better—it will likely make them more hesitant to smile. Instead, stay patient and encouraging. A relaxed and happy kid will eventually give you that perfect smile!

4. Smile Yourself—Even If You’re Not in the Photos

Kids take their emotional cues from their parents. If you’re tense, stressed, or frustrated, they’ll feel it. But if you’re smiling and showing joy (even when you’re standing behind the photographer), they’re more likely to mirror that energy. Be their biggest cheerleader, and their natural happiness will shine through!

5. Make It Fun!

Kids love to have fun, so turn the session into a playful experience. Dance, tell funny stories, play peek-a-boo, or let them run and explore. The more they enjoy themselves, the more their real smiles will come through. And sometimes, the in-between moments—when they’re laughing at a silly face or chasing a sibling—end up being the most precious captures.

Final Thoughts

A photography session should be an enjoyable experience, not a stressful one. By focusing on fun, positivity, and letting kids be themselves, you’ll get those big, happy, natural smiles that melt your heart every time you look at the photos.
