This fall, I had the incredible honor of photographing the Davie High School War Eagle Marching Band for the second time. While I’ve photographed many different events and sessions over the years, band photos have quickly become one of my absolute favorite projects.
Why? Because the marching band is such an important part of school spirit, yet it often doesn’t get the same spotlight as other activities. Capturing these talented students gives them a moment to shine, and it’s a way to celebrate the dedication, artistry, and teamwork that band requires.
Photographing Over 100 Musicians
This year’s session included 107 students, each bringing their personality and pride to the camera. Every student received an individual portrait, and then I combined all of the images together into one large composite photo of the entire band. Seeing that final piece come together is always a powerful reminder of how much heart is behind this program.
And yes—this project is personal for me, too. One of those faces in the band is my son, Bayden, who plays the alto saxophone. As a parent, I know the late nights, rehearsals, and countless hours these kids dedicate. Having the chance to photograph him and his bandmates is a gift I don’t take for granted.
Creative Templates & Options
This year, I offered parents and students several different photo template designs to choose from, along with traditional portraits. From bold graphics and smoky backgrounds to timeless black-and-white silhouettes, the variety gave families the chance to pick what best fits their style. I am so happy with how these turned out—each design really captured the energy of the band.
Band Pride in the Stands
If you’ve been to a football game recently, you may have noticed something fun in the crowd: band parent lanyards. Many parents proudly wear them in the stands, and it’s such a great way to show support for their kids and the program. Little details like that really build community and highlight how special this group is.
Final Thoughts
Photographing the Davie High Marching Band isn’t just about taking pictures—it’s about telling a story of commitment, teamwork, and school pride. These students work so hard, and I love being able to give them images that reflect their dedication and passion.
To the Class of 2026 and the entire War Eagle Marching Band: thank you for letting me capture your season. You are truly a vital part of what makes Davie High so special.
