Every year around February and March my inbox fills with the same question:
“We booked spring photos… but what do we wear?”
Choosing outfits doesn’t have to be stressful — and honestly, it matters less than most people think. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is coordination, comfort, and letting your family look like you.
Spring sessions are some of my favorites because colors, textures, and soft light all work together naturally. When outfits complement the season instead of fighting it, the images feel timeless instead of trendy.
Below are simple guidelines I give every family before their session.
1. Start With Mom’s Outfit First
This sounds small, but it makes everything easier.
Pick the outfit you feel confident and comfortable in — then build everyone else around that. If you try to coordinate 5 outfits at once, it gets overwhelming quickly.
Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, and movement photograph beautifully in spring because they match the season’s softness.
Think:
-
midi or maxi dresses
-
soft cotton or linen
-
subtle prints
-
sleeves or layers for dimension
When mom feels good → the whole session feels relaxed.
2. Coordinate Colors — Don’t Match
Matching white shirts and jeans used to be the standard. Now it actually makes photos feel flat.
Instead, choose a color palette.
Spring works best with light, earthy, and muted tones:
-
soft blues
-
sage green
-
blush pink
-
cream
-
tan
-
dusty lavender
-
light denim
-
subtle florals
The goal is variety within the same color story.
👉 A good rule:
3–5 colors total across the whole family
3. Mix Textures and Layers
Texture makes photos feel alive.
This is the difference between “everyone wore a shirt” and “this feels like a moment.”
Great spring textures:
-
knits
-
linen
-
chambray
-
gauze cotton
-
lace
-
light sweaters
-
denim jackets
Layers also help when spring weather changes — and they give us options during the session.
4. Avoid These Common Outfit Mistakes
These are the biggest things that date photos quickly:
Avoid:
-
neon colors
-
large logos
-
athletic wear
-
all black outfits
-
stiff formal clothing
-
identical outfits on kids
-
super tiny busy patterns
-
characters/graphics
The goal is timeless, not trendy.
5. Dress Kids Like Kids
You don’t need miniature adult outfits.
Kids photograph best when they can move comfortably:
-
soft fabrics
-
simple patterns
-
clothes that fit well
-
nothing itchy or tight
If they feel comfortable, they act natural — and natural is what makes the photos meaningful.
6. Think About Location + Season
Spring sessions in North Carolina are soft, colorful, and bright.
So outfits should feel light.
Heavy winter clothing or dark fall tones fight the environment. Light fabrics and softer colors blend into the scenery and keep the focus on your family.
7. Shoes Matter More Than You Think
The camera sees everything — including footwear.
Best options:
-
neutral sandals
-
boots
-
clean sneakers
-
flats
Try to avoid neon sneakers, bulky athletic shoes, or bright logos.
My Biggest Advice
You don’t need perfect outfits.
You need outfits that:
-
coordinate
-
feel comfortable
-
let your family interact naturally
The moments always matter more than the clothing — the clothes just help the photos feel cohesive.
